If you use instagram to promote your business, I have great news for you. Quitting that godforsaken platform will actually GROW your business! That’s right. Quitting instagram is one of the best thing online business owners can do for profits, and I’m SO excited to tell you why in today’s article.
First of all, I know you’re already feeling a major wave of relief at the idea of getting the hell off of Instagram. You probably just got a little warm fuzzy feeling in your chest when you read the title of this post. And how do I know this?….Because exactly ZERO percent of the business owners I’ve worked with have had any real success or conversions with the garbage heap that is instagram.
Here’s a quick survey from one of my recent events, filled with incredible business owners, and exactly ZERO percent of them reported that they enjoyed any sort of profits from using instagram. The survey results below are a typical of what I’ve heard from HUNDREDS of business owners:

Instagram Reels Are Lame
I’m sorry. It’s true. All of us need an honest family meeting at the dinner table right now to just air out our feelings. Can we all just hold hands, look eachother in the eyes, and be honest? The reels we post to promote our businesses ARE NOT very good.
Reels are for clips of puppies and frat boys doing fart pranks. Reels are for awesome drag queen moments and fabulous celebrity dresses. Reels are for quick clips of St. Tropez or whatever the hell.

Instagram Reels are NOT A GOOD PLACE for teachers and leaders to get our messages out. Again…I will say it one more time….I’m Sorry. But it’s the God’s honest truth.
- Nobody is going to instagram to hear about a deep message.
- Nobody is going on instagram to learn anything (AT ALLLLLL)
- Nobody is going on instagram for anything other than mental versions of doritos, cheetos, pizza, and funnel cakes
Even the absolute BEST content on instagram is nothing above a C-. That’s what reels are for!!! C- content, delivered hot and fresh like a drive-thru at McDonalds.
Yet there are MILLIONS of incredible business owners and teachers like you are trying to cram your teachings into this drive-thru window formatting. The result is that you’ve now taken your life’s work, and coated it in McDonalds Fast Food Thousand Island Dressing.

Your content is a sample of what it’s like to work with you. And millions of business owners are conforming to fast food vibes, doling out “samples” of their work on instagram that taste like cheese-coated McDonalds fries instead of the filet mignon they actually serve up in their businesses.
Instagram Conversions are Very Poor
I heard the Calm Creative say that she felt Instagram was like a Las Vegas strip where people are throwing flyers begging to be seen. I couldn’t agree more. It’s one giant, tacky, flyer throwing. attention grabbing garbage heap.
The conversions on Instagram are terrible because of the very nature of the platform. Is a pile of random 30 second clips designed specifically to DISTRACT the viewer. The mode of a person scrolling through instagram can be described as “gold fish hopped up on sugar and snacks”.

Millions of business owners are wasting countless hours going to a pond of confused, distracted, disinterested gold fish who want to gummy bears for dinner…and they’re trying to get the goldfish interested in filet mignon. Hold my hand when I tell you this….NOBODY GOES TO INSTAGRAM FOR FILET MIGNON.
What does this mean?….
- They aren’t clicking through to your website
- They aren’t downloading your freebies
- They aren’t purchasing your products or services
The confused and distracted goldfish are very busy eating their gummy bears, and they have ZERO interest in leaving gummy bear island. Yes…they know you offer filet mignon. Yes. They know it would be a good idea to learn more about the benefits of eating filet mignon…but right now THEY ARE EATING GUMMY BEARS!!!
Here’s What to Do Instead
There are literally hundreds of better ways to promote your business beyond instagram. But for the sake of honoring your time, I’m going to share three things you can start doing TODAY.
- Start a YouTube channel. I started teaching online business a few years ago, and one of the main reasons I offer courses about YouTube is because IT WORKS! Most business owners who post quality content to YouTube enjoy conversion rates of between 15%-30% or more. YouTube helps people to know, like, and trust you!
- Write articles for your website. This helps people to find you, and see you as an authority in your field!
- Start a podcast. This could be as simple as popping your YouTube videos directly into BuzzSprout whenever you upload. This is also known as a “video podcast”.
- Create an email autoresponder. This is a sequence of messages that you can send anyone who signs up for your freebies, and guides them to the buying process while delivering value.

Basically, start creating awesome long form content. This gives your people a chance to understand that YOU CAN HELP THEM. These pieces of long form content are ASSETS for your business. These are pieces of content that live for years!
Burn the following into your mind….Hears are Meaningless. Hearts and Reels are NOT assets. They are bananas rotting on a shelf every 48 hours.

Instagram reels only live for about 48 hours. Most people are not going to see the reels you worked so hard to make after 48 hours. Instead of wasting your precious time being a slave inside of the Instagram Sweat Shop, start creating pieces of content that actually LIVE FOR YEARS.
