If you haven’t found your calling in the world, it’s because you’re looking in the wrong place.
You might be restlessly hoping for some perfect career to come along, bringing with it a magic sensation of fireworks blossoming in your heart. You might have an idea of how your worldly calling “should” feel. And you might be feeling like you’re missing something in your life if you haven’t felt that imagined feeling.
The first step of every personal-development book is “know where you want to go”. But what if feel paralyzed to make a choice?
You’re not paralyzed because you don’t know what you want. You’re paralyzed because nothing in the world calls to your heart. At least not the way you think it “should”. Nothing feels the way you’re expecting it to feel. Nothing is giving you that special fireworks feeling.
And yet you want to want to do something. You want to express your beautiful soul in this life. But in order to do that, you need to choose. But no choice is calling to you. And round and round it goes. You could spend a lifetime in this trap.
Luckily, by the end of this post, you will be free from the claws of this trap.
You’ve Got Divine Discontent
What you’re experiencing is called “Divine Discontent”. Not to be confused with regular human suffering, divine discontent is a state of restlessness coming from a higher place.
It’s a calling from your soul, and from the Divine Beloved. The call is for you to make some changes, and start living in alignment with your Higher Self. Many people misunderstand this restlessness as a pull to get a fancy new job, or find the perfect career, or to find an altruistic cause.
Divine Discontent is your soul calling you home. Nothing more. Nothing less.
The Fireworks are Within
Part of the reason nothing in the world is calling to your heart is because you have evolved…but your ego is not yet 100% on board.
Your ego is looking for the perfect STUFF OUT THERE to give a sense of wholeness and “I am good enough”. Your ego believes that you are not a perfect being; that you need to get a career, relationship, and special title to hopefully one day become perfect. Or at the very least, hide your lowly, not-good-enough self from the world.
Yet on a deep level, you’ve come to understand that nothing in the world can make you feel whole or complete because you already are. And on an even deeper level, you understand the elusive “magic” feeling your ego wants can only be found inside yourself.
You understand that the there are no fireworks to be found out there.
More importantly, you understand that the fireworks can only happen within.
Heeding The Call
This means you simply change your focus and expectations. You stop expecting anyone or anything in the world to make you feel ecstasy. You stop waiting for some magic career or relationship to surgically implant bliss into your heart. The bliss is already there, you just need to shift your focus so you can feel it.
All signs point within
- If nothing “out there” is calling to you, the only place to go is within.
- If nothing “out there” brings you joy, you’ve reached a dead end with the game of accumulating stuff, accomplishments, and trophies. The only place to go is within.
- If nothing “out there” has the promise of bringing you a sense of homecoming, the only place to go is within.
External situations and circumstances cannot and will never bring you “to paradise” the way your ego thinks it will.
So stop looking out there, and turn inward. Get quiet. Enjoy being here now. That’s it.
Now What?
So does this mean we sit in a lotus position and meditate all day? Probably not.
There may be periods in your life when you focus on just being. During my own spiritual awakening, I was pulled to go inward. This consisted of quitting youtube, letting go of a thriving business, and spending plenty of time in contemplative meditation and spiritual study.
But even during my own spiritual awakening, I was still taking action. I was studying, getting new certifications, training with mentors, and honing my skills as a teacher.
Your soul will rarely request that you do nothing in the world. Action is a nourishing part of life.
The key to life is this; When you have the fireworks within, everything you do in the world is lit by you. You bring your “purpose” to all the things you do. To all your roles. To everything you touch.
And if you’re still not pulled to anything in the world, don’t wait for things to pull you. Start watching for anything that moves your energetic dial a little. Even just 2%.
Enjoy making eggs in the morning? That moved the dial. Do more of that.
Enjoy the idea of painting? Go get supplies and try it.

Start trying things out. Start bringing the embers of your inner fireworks to whatever it is you do. And most of all, start committing yourself to creating the flames of passion out there.
It’s your responsibility to CREATE the passion in your life.
Passion in the world doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you bring the embers, when you stoke the flames, when you give enough attention and care to whatever it is you’re doing. And sometimes luck strikes. Sometimes, what we’re doing out there catches fire and you enjoy it while it lasts.
But always, no matter what happens out there, you’re eternally blessed by the fireworks within.
