Post Like a Business Owner, Not an Influencer.

There was a time before the word “Influencer” meant anything. Can I be honest with you? Part of me really wishes to have the word “Influencer” wiped from my memory….Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Style.

“I’ll take one partial lobotomy please ☝️, but only the erasure of Influencer culture.

“That’s Rich Coming From You, Brenda”

You might be thinking it’s a bit hypocritical coming from one of the OG “Fitness Influencers” to hit the scene.

After all, I was doing workouts and meal preps on camera before Gen Alphas were even born….which is weird because I’m still 24 years old 🤔.

But here’s the thing, I have always despised being called an “influencer”. The first time anyone ever called me that, it felt like being called a slur. And that’s because it kind of IS a slur.

You Are Not An Influencer….You’re a Skilled Professional

When people started to catch on to the fact you can make money online by talking to a camera, this hideous thing called “Influencer” was born.

This is a person who has zero technical skills or expertise in their topic, who postures, asks for free stuff, and tends to just say random bull$hit for the sake of views and attention.

I was never an influencer, and I never will be one. I was a certified nutritionist, trainer, and strength and conditioning specialist (CNS, CPT, CSCS) with thousands of hours of experience under my belt. I was also a business owner and a writer.

You aren’t an influencer either…obviously. You are a business owner & artist. You’ve studied your ass off, have experience in what you’re teaching, and know your stuff like the back of your hand. Your life’s work is your art.

You and I can agree that we don’t want to have anything to do with “influencer culture”.

We’re Not Influencers. So Let’s Not Follow Their Content Strategy

We’ve all been steeped in this strange soup of influencer culture the last decade. The result? 👉 Business Owner Artists are mistakenly following the lead of influencers.

Here’s What Influencer Culture Recommends:

👉 Waste time on instagram…stories, reels, posts, comments all damn day (even though it doesn’t get you sales)
👉 Post daily to tiktok and instagram for “visibility” (even though you kinda hate it, and it doesn’t lead to sales)
👉 Focus on views and subscriber numbers (even though it sucks the joy out of the process)
👉 Focus on image and persona (even though you have a feeling you need to be more authentic to do your best work)
👉 Let trends influence your content (even though you have a ton of really interesting video ideas, you’re on instagram finding a trending song 🫤)
👉 Try to go viral (even though you know deep down that’s not what you were put on this earth to focus on)

This is a recipe for burnout, emptiness, and a business without profits. Not to mention a possible “grippy sock vacation”, as my friend Ava calls it. (aka a mental breakdown) 👇

Post Like a Business Owner Artist… Not an Influencer

There’s an attitude and intention you can take with all of this that will help you to STAND OUT and BE SEEN…not as an “influencer”, but as an artist and authority in your field.

Here’s the truth:

👉 You don’t need to post a bunch of content. A few great YouTube videos are a million times better than 20 cheeto-quality reels.
👉 You don’t need a jump-cut editing style Your soul-led messages are engaging enough to carry your videos.
👉 You don’t need to squeeze your personality into some weird box You are incredibly interesting….but the world can only see that when you show them who you are.
👉 You don’t need a ton of views to have a thriving business A small audience of buyers more profitable than a huge audience of people want to be entertained (let the influencers entertain people…that’s not your job).
